After a good few hours of rain in New York tennis did finally get underway last night with Great Britain’s Jordanne Whiley taking on her doubles partner Yui Kamiji who she has won 6 Grand Slam titles with her but this time were at the opposite ends of the tennis court as they met in the final of the women’s wheelchair singles final!
Yui already had two Grand Slam singles titles to her name in 2014 at the French Open and was defending her title at the US Open however Jordanne was after her first ever singles Grand Slam title.
The Brit got off to a good start breaking serve of her opponent and then going on to take a 2-0 lead in the set before going on to win the set 6-4 with Jordanne just dropping two points on serve when she got her first serve into play.
The second set was one to forget for Jordanne as Yui responded in fashion to take the set 6-0 against her doubles partner with just the four points won on serve in the second set from Jordanne however she responded very well in the third set.
The third set may have been the longest of the match at 42 minutes but it was dominated by Jordanne as she took it 6-1 to win the match 6-4 0-6 6-1 in 1 hour and 50 minutes to claim her first Grand Slam singles title! Congratulations!
