Tokyo Preview – Angelique Kerber v Daria Gavrilova

Daria Gavrilova must be sick of the sight of Angelique Kerber (in a nice way) this year as the two players are set to play each other for the fourth time this year with all four meetings being won by Angelique Kerber who has only dropped one set to the 21 year old in Sydney at the beginning of the year and dominated their last meeting in Stanford about 7 weeks ago winning 6-1 6-3.

It’s not happening for Daria right now having lost three of her last four matches. She was due to play Sharapova in the first round of the US Open and I predicted an upset and Sharapova ended up withdrawing a day before the tournament. At this point I thought Daria should be heading into round two but in the battle of the Daria’s in New York she lost in three sets to lucky loser Daria Kasatkina. If you look further back she has only won 3 of her last 10 matches so is struggling for form.

Whislt she is struggling for form one of the form players this year has been Angelique Kerber who has over 40 wins and 4 titles to her name this year all WTA Premier tournaments and is ranked at 11 in the world right now but I hope she does make the WTA Finals next month. Despite success on the WTA tour she hasn’t found any in the Grand Slams with only 6 wins in the four tournaments this year and not making it past the third round of any of the tournaments. 6 wins is her lowest since 2011 when she only won 5 matches but did make the semi-finals of the US Open that year where all her 5 wins came from.

I’m quite excited for this match. Both Kerber and Gavrilova are great characters and tennis needs their passion, emotion and desire on court which I don’t think we see enough of on the men’s tour. When you watch any sport you don’t want to come away after 90 minutes or so without getting off your seat during the match you want to be up and cheering these players and this is what they bring to the court.
