The end of the season is upon us. There are still a couple of tournaments to go ahead of the WTA Finals in Singapore which has already seen Simona Halep, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova qualify however only Halep will be on show in China with Sharapova and Serena withdrawing with Serena withdrawing from all tournaments from now until the end of the season including Singapore.
With the withdrawals of Serena and Sharapova the tournament opens up before it has even began and the chance is there for Pennetta, Radwanska, Ivanovic and Wozniacki to go on a good run and potentially qualify for Singapore.
This is a big chance the players I mentioned above but also a big chance for Simona Halep who has already qualified for Singapore but now has the chance to consolidate her place as world number two. Simona is already about 2000 points ahead of Maria and with Maria being defending champion she will drop points and for Halep she has to be targeting getting to the final where she will pick up 650 points for finishing as runner up or 1000 for winning the tournament and that should seal number two ahead of next season and the Australian Open.
Will Bacsinszky get back to winning ways?
Timea Bacsinszky of course made the semi-finals of Roland Garros and since then her year has fallen apart. She made the quarter finals of Wimbledon but is on a 5 match losing streak and hasn’t played any tennis for a month! She is seeded for the tournament but hasn’t won a match for over 90 days but could still make the WTA Finals however I don’t think she will but she needs to get a couple of wins going from now until the end of the season. It will be a tough start for Timea Bacsinszky as she begins her tournament against the Italian Camila Giorgi.
US Open Champion
This is the first time we will see Flavia Pennetta play since winning the US Open. Not only will it be her last appearance in China but one of the few tournaments left before the Italian retires. WTA Finals is a possibility for Pennetta and would be great to see her qualify and bow out on the WTA tour at the finals in Singapore. Pennetta will begin her tournament against Xinyun Han a wildcard from China.
Eugenie Bouchard was due to play in Wuhan but didn’t after suffering from her concussion symptons again but is down to play in Beijing this week. It’s impossible for her to qualify for Singapore right now and it’s just about finishing the season on a high but she does have a tough round one match against Andrea Petkovic who leads their head to head 3-1 but lost their last match at Wimbledon 2014 when Bouchard made the final however Petkovic has lost her last three matches to Monica Puig and two losses against Johanna Konta in New York and Wuhan.
There will be previews and reviews of matches during the tournament so stay tuned on what is set to be another big week on the WTA tour and potentially a decisive one on the Road to Singapore!
