It’s been an emotional rollercoaster throughout the year. 16 teams began the World Group back in March but round by round we have lost teams and are now left with two as Belgium take on Great Britain in the Davis Cup final.
So, who will be representing each team?
David Goffin (singles – 16 / doubles 378)
Steve Darcis (singles – 84 / doubles 596)
Ruben Bemelmans (singles – 108 / doubles 160)
Kimmer Coppejans (singles – 128 / doubles – 501)
Belgium’s key players is David Goffin. He has continued to improve over the last two seasons and maybe next year I see no reason why he can’t potentially break into the top 10. He and Andy will obviously play on Friday and whoever wins this one could set the tone for the weekend but who will play the other singles match?
Steve Darcis played in both singles matches against Argentina so I’d fully expect him to feature on the Friday afternoon session but he also played the doubles as well so is a potential five sets in singles and doubles in about 24 hours ideal?
Andy Murray (singles – 2 / doubles – 180)
Kyle Edmund (singles – 100 / doubles – N/A)
Jamie Murray (singles – N/A / doubles – 7)
Dominic Inglot (singles – N/A / doubles – 23)
James Ward (singles – 156 / doubles – N/A)
Obviously the expectation is on Andy to win two matches which you’d expect so where does the other win come from?
Officially Edmund and Ward have been chosen but only one can be selected to play but who? You could even throw Dan Evans into this as he has travelled to Brussels as well!
The likely hood is that Darcis plays so I would honestly go with Kyle Edmund making his debut in the Davis Cup Final! Steve and Kyle have never played before but Edmund has improved a lot this year and has dealt with a tough crowd against him at Roland Garros where he defeated Stephane Robert over five sets to claim his first win at Roland Garros on the clay.
Doubles wise you’d expect Jamie and Andy to play on Saturday afternoon but if Great Britain were to be leading 2-0 after Day one then I’d expect Jamie and Dom to play as I think they are capable of defeating Darcis and Bemelmans with both playing some very good tennis recently!
The draw for the Davis Cup Final will take place on Thursday and nominations can change!!
