Doha Preview – Garbine Muguruza v Andrea Petkovic

Garbine Muguruza was one of the players I said I’d hope would do well in Doha this week and well she is the only one of three mentioned in a previous piece who has made it to the quarter finals. The Spaniard has controlled her matches really well this week in Doha but now faces an opponent she hasn’t had much joy against in the past in Andrea Petkovic losing their two previous meetings on the tour but haven’t played each other for over a year and a lot has changed since then.

At the moment consistency seems to be a problem for a lot of top players but for Andrea Petkovic she has kind of gone under the radar these last couple of weeks and is the only player to have made the quarter finals of Dubai and Doha but can she book her place in the semi-final?

Petkovic is a very good top 20 player, I do think she has the talent to be ranked round about 8-12 in the world but has lacked consistency. Level of performances vary at times but you never know what you’re going to get which is good but also to be a consistent top 10 player you need to be making quarter finals, semi-finals and finals regularly.

Muguruza on the other hand has played a good few matches this week. I was impressed with how she coped with the pressure Babos put on her in the second set to see out the match whereas over the last few weeks we’ve seen a few top players panic under this situation and end up losing from a set up.

Despite losing their previous two meetings I think right now Muguruza has the edge in this one despite Petkovic’ recent good run this season and I think a straight sets win for Muguruza is on the cards but who knows what may happen?
