For the first time in the long history of the Stuttgart final was between two German ladies. The beginning of the match was a dream start for qualifier Laura Siegemund going up 3-0 with a break of serve against the world number three however it quickly turned into a nightmare for Siegemund who went on to win just one of the next twelve games as Kerber went on to seal a 6-4 6-0 win defending her title in Stuttgart.
Siegemund started the better of the two with Kerber not finding her feet from the off with an ace to get the first game on the board for the qualifier and the drop shots were a great weapon against Kerber in the opening 4/5 games of the match but in the end the drop shots cost her in my opinion.
Kerber started to find rhythm and up the gears and got to almost every drop shot and what surprised me was the lack of conviction from Siegemund on a number of drop shots especially when break point down.
The second wasn’t really a contest to be the honest. At 0-2 down Siegemund went off court with the trainer and quickly found herself 0-3 down and this point the contest was over as it didn’t take long ago for Kerber to simply stroll to defending her title and winning another title!
It’s been a great week for Siegemund with wins against Vinci, Halep and Radwanska but a good week ends in a tough defeat to the current Australian Open champion.
