Roland Garros Preview – Nick Kyrgios v Richard Gasquet

Having met at Wimbledon for the past couple of years this time it’s a change of scenery for Richard Gasquet and Nick Kyrgios as they are to meet on Richard’s home soil at Roland Garros.

Since their first meeting back in 2014 in the Davis Cup their matches have been excellent and unpredictable.

The standout match involving these two for me was at Wimbledon in 2014 where Kyrgios really burst onto the scene. He made the headlines with his epic win against Rafael Nadal but in the previous round he had to save 10 match points against Richard Gasquet which surprisingly didn’t make major headlines at the time.

I believe Nick is getting better and better I do think though he is given a hard time in the press. He’s been given this bad boy image but I like what Nick brings to the court. I fully agree he has overstepped the mark a few times but tell me a player that hasn’t?

Nick is the big game player. He draws a crowd at every major threat. His tennis is great and will get better. This is a big year for Nick. He has to climb the rankings, he has the Olympic games to look forward to and with over rising stars like Thiem and Zverev doing well at the moment you don’t want to be left behind and miss whilst Thiem is playing incredibly well at the moment.

Gasquet can cause problems for Nick. Their meeting at Wimbledon stole the headlines last year with Nick apparently ‘tanking’ during a game and was very annoyed throughout the whole match.

Richard can be quite dangerous off the backhand as he can achieve great variation and speed off it but should be looking for that flat and driven backhand down the line to move Kyrgios about as if the Australian has time on clay he can work an opening to put himself in the driving seat.

I do think Nick is the favourite for the match, I want to see him go far in these big tournaments and if he pulls off the win against Gasquet then Nishikori or Verdasco will be waiting in round four.
