The first of Wimbledon was full of drama, surprises, shocks and as expected rain but what have been the main talking points at SW19 so far?
Gilles Simon’s weather update
Well just a couple of games into Gilles’ match against Dimitrov which he subsequently lost the Frenchman was caught on camera giving a little weather update.
“It’s raining on grass. That’s amazing. Grass is wet. Over, thank you.”
Gilles wasn’t too happy about having to play in these conditions before play was suspended for the day and the Frenchman wasn’t too happy whilst speaking in his press conference.
The shock of the year. Novak Djokovic losing to Sam Querrey at Wimbledon is still unbelievable. Even at two sets down when the rain came it still felt like Novak would perform a miracle as he did last year v Kevin Anderson but despite taking the third set he couldn’t produce the comeback and the American pulled off the biggest win of his career!
BBC presenter Sue Barker stole the headlines on the 29th with her quick rendition of ‘Shoes off, if you love Willis’ a song made to support British player Marcus Willis
At 2-2 5-3 30-30 Ramos Vinolas hit a serve which did look out, umpired overruled and then all hell broke loose.
This decision gave Ramos Vinolas match point and Troicki wasn’t having any of it shouting at the umpire telling him to look at the ball calling him the worst umpire in the world and this continued during handshake with the Serbian shouting at the umpire “do you know what you have done?”
Kvitova knocked out early once again!
Two time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova has had a tough year on the tour and it hasn’t got any easier with an early exit against Ekaterina Makarova who was ranked top 10 herself not long ago. The defeat wasn’t a surprise for the former champion in my opinion but it is a shame to see a great player struggling with form right now!
Where else to finish off than talking about Marcus Willis? Ranked at 772 and wins six qualifying matches before winning against top 60 ranked Berankis and then set up a dream match against Roger Federer and lobbed the former champion
The next day he was back at Wawrickshire tennis club where he coaches and was playing in a tennis league match the day after playing Federer at Wimbledon.
What a story! J
