At the beginning of the week I began with the word opportunity now I finish with the phrase ‘opportunity taken’ as Monica Puig ranked at 34 in the world became the first Puerto Rican women to win an Olympic medal let alone a gold medal and the lowest ranked tennis player to ever win Olympic Gold.
This is more than just tennis this is watching someone leave everything on the court every game played and the tears at the end of every game shows what it means to her.
Puerto Rico is a small country with a population of just under 3.5 million and she has well and truly put her country on the map. She made headlines in Eastbourne prior to Wimbledon and she’s taken that form a few thousand miles from Britain to Rio and has created probably the biggest story to come out of tennis in over a decade.
Watching Monica has been such a delight. She hits the ball so cleanly and the winners she has hit off both the forehand and backhand has been exceptional and to get the better of great defenders in Muguruza and Kerber in straight sets is ridiculous!
I really don’t know what else to say, I’m speechless. This is Olympic tennis, we want to see our favourites do well but the underdog is what makes sport great. What this could do for her country and career is massive!
Olympic Gold is something many top players have dreamt about and missed out on but this isn’t a dream, this is a reality!
Well done Monica!
