Sometimes you just have to wait and be patient. This years US Open saw a high number of top players out injured. With no Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka, Nishikori or Raonic it left the tournament short of big names and Federer and Nadal in the same half. Defeats to Tsonga, Zverev and Cilic in the bottom half of the draw opened it up big time and it has never been wider than this before.
One of Sam Querrey, Kevin Anderson, Pablo Carreno Busta or Diego Schwartzman will make the final of the US Open this year, but who will it be?
Sam Querrey v Kevin Anderson
The battle of the big servers. Sam Querrey the first American male in a quarter final of the US Open since 2011 and his run in New York has made him a contender for a place in London at the World Tour Finals taking over Andy Murray and is hot on the heels of Novak Djokovic who won’t play again this year.
Sam and Kevin both bring a big serve to the game but also have adapted that craft needed in the modern game to challenge and climb the rankings.
I am pleased to see Kevin doing well after a tough time out with injury for quite a while he has steadily found some form and deserves his shot again in New York where he defeated Andy MUrray a couple of years back.
Diego Schwartzman v Pablo Carreno-Busta
Pablo is a player who has grown quietly on the tour this year he goes about his business and gets results and it would take one of these majors to make a big impact and he has. I was really impressed with his performance against Shapovalov as you wouldn’t be surprised to see a player get caught up in the excitement surrounding the Canadian in New York but he has that steel and grit as well as style in his game to edge out close encounters which makes him a danger.
Diego is explosive. At 5 foot 7 he not the biggest threat on the tour but he makes he move. He is enjoying his best year on the tour right now and deserves to be in this position. He has seen off a host of tough and different opponents in New York beginning with Janko Tipsarevic, Marin Cilic and recently Lucas Pouille all bring something totally different to a tennis court.
Only one will make it, but who?
