25 year old Diego Schwartzman picked up the biggest title of his career tonight. Over the last 6 months the consistency has been there for Diego making the quarters in New York last autumn and has been steady ever since.
Diego was strong from the off in this final against Verdasco. The first two games from both were messy from both in all honesty but once he got into the rhythm he asked the questions which makes him so dangerous on a clay court as he bides his time and defends with interest.
Being effective on a clay court isn’t always about having an offensive game but defending well asking those questions and he perfected it. It’s not often you come away from a 6-2 6-2 win and think that was actually close. In rallies it was close, even more in set two but Diego frustrated Fernando and stayed in those awkward rallies forcing the errors.
Fernando finished with 31 errors and Diego with 14 which is a major difference. The 31 went down as unforced which is unfair on both players.
The tennis was very good from the Argentine and it will be interesting to see where the tennis goes over the next month at Indian Wells and Miami however will be most dangerous on the clay as he has shown in Rio!
