This afternoon a big announcement was made by Indian Wells. With the tournament set to begin in about 48 hours a big give-away has been announced which has a whiff of desperation.
If you win the singles and the doubles title you will walk away with an extra $1,000,000 meaning you’d take $2,780,210 in prize money which isn’t bad for two weeks work but why do I sense desperation?
Indian Wells is often called the fifth Grand Slam but in the first week it’s pretty quiet to be honest and the main stand doesn’t even half fill.
This year especially on the men’s side there is no Murray, Wawrinka, Nadal, Goffin, Tsonga, Gasquet and also concerns over Raonic, Novak and Nishikori going into this one plus some questions regarding players’ form so pulling the crowd in and the remaining top players to play as much as possible is key!
With so many top male players missing in particular I do believe this has been put in place to draw these singles players to compete in doubles as quite a few do including Nadal and Wawrinka who were due to before their withdrawals from Indian Wells and getting more of them playing should increase the footfall around Indian Wells however is it disrespectful to week in week out doubles players?
I think it is… some of these players play week in week out and work extremely hard and I’ve never liked singles players just turning up for a jolly to be honest and maybe the $1,000,000 would be better spent on doubles prize money?
