Stunned! Kokkinakis takes out Federer in Miami!

Not many 21 year olds have been through what Thanasi Kokkinakis has been through on the tennis court. The Australian turns 22 next month and has shown he has the talent to deliver, a talent that was never in doubt sadly he was plagued by injury!

He played 1 match between November 2015 and May 2017 having being taken apart by injury after injury playing just one match in 2016 at the Summer Olympics.

In May 2017 he returned to the tour and has been steadily returning to the tour playing Challenger events and other ATP events and has claimed the biggest win of his career coming back from two sets down to defeat Roger Federer in Miami.

Kokkinakis’ performance was great to watch! He just went for it, in similar style to Del Potro in Indian Wells just last week the Australian was so good off the forehand and you could see the nerves in his body language but he managed to counter it time and time again in the match frustrating the world number one.

Frustration did seem to get too much for Roger who was visibly annoyed hitting error after error especially in the tie-break where Kokkinakis was mountains above one of the greatest in the world.

It’s been a long journey back but what a return to build on for the young man who has the talent to be top 10 easily! He had a career high of 68 and even at 175 right now he’s qualified and caused the biggest upset of the calendar year so far!

Well done Thanasi!

On another note immediately after the match Roger Federer announced he would not be participating in clay court events again this year and will return in Halle followed by Wimbledon.
