Karolina Pliskova’s week was tricky but very successful. The Czech number one picked up her 10th title of her career following a straight sets win against Coco Vandeweghe in Stuttgart winning 7-6 6-4 as she surprises us once again on the clay.
Karolina’s last two tournaments on the clay were Roland Garros last year where she made the semi-finals and now champion here in Stuttgart which is full of top class players and she came through it.
I’ve never had Karolina down as a clay court player. He game naturally suits grass and hard courts but her results have been very good and it will be interesting to see where things do go over the next few weeks.
Karolina was due to head to Prague but has withdrawn, she would have had to play her sister Kristyna but said it would be uncomfortable. The expectancy is now for her to head to Madrid and then Rome ahead of Roland Garros.
I missed the final against Coco but watched it back and the win was a great achievement but I have to be honest and I honestly wouldn’t still put Karolina in a bracket of contenders at Roland Garros despite her semi-final last year and what she has done in Stuttgart but I would love to be proved wrong.
These next few weeks are a big test for a number of players to show us what they can do on the clay and Karolina has done her chances no harm but I’d love to see her go and build on this.
Compared to some of the others that have been in action this last week she has less to worry about!
