Djokovic 7-5 6-4 Nishikori – Novak – “what I needed”, Questions for Kei and the worst smash in tennis history?

Not very often you get two titans on the ATP tour meet at round one in A masters 1000 but that was the case as Novak Djokovic and Kei Nishikori met in Madrid in what turned out to be a clockwork like win for the former world number one.

Both came into this first round meetings with big questions over their respective games and what needs improving. Djokovic has answered a lot of questions raised in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona where as for Kei Nishikori since making the final of Monte-Carlo it’s fallen apart a little.

Novak Djokovic said after the match it was “what he needed” and he performed very well indeed, it was 100% his best performance of the season. He moved well, backhand was much stronger and he was aggressive off the return the only thing that needs a slight improvement is that smash…

There may be questions over that smash but it didn’t halt the performance from the Serb however questions of Kei.

What makes these questions over Kei’s fitness and game right now magnified is the fact he got to the final of Monte-Carlo. It was just a bizarre week there and withdrawal from Barcelona and now here I don’t think he is physically ready on the tour to compete at the highest level but a consistent level and if I were him I’d skip Rome and head to Roland Garros.
