Who is Bernarda Pera?
23 year old Bernarda Pera was ranked outside the worlds top 300 this time last year at 324 in the world. Now the American-Croat is on course to finish this week ranked inside the top 75 in the world.
I’ve watched Bernarda a couple of times this year and on both occasions I have been left impressed but also disappointed. Both matches I have watched her play in were against British number one Johanna Konta.
The first was at the Australian Open in Melbourne at the beginning of the year. She played a very strong and well-thought out game as she defeated the Brit 6-4 7-5.
She always had a plan in mind whether she was using her forehand and following in at the net to secure the winner as shown above but also returning serve she went for it on the Ad side either running around the backhand to play a forehand up the line or vice versa.
This was similar in Madrid last night.
Their match ended around 12:15 am local time and the American was very impressive once again going down the middle of the court a lot and planting the ball at the feet of the British number one awaiting that short reply which she got and could pounce on.
Pera did get tense at the very end of the match serving it out which was expected but big credit to her but disappointment for Jo again who looked very short of confidence.
