Roland Garros never fails to deliver. Day 1 saw surprises, survivals and shocks as ladies and gents on the tour began and ended their trip to Paris.
David Goffin is considered as a potential contender for the title but the Belgian had to go the long way round in round one as he fought hard to win from two sets down to defeat Robin Haase; 4-6 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-1 to stay in the tournament. I would usually consider David a contender but in my previews I didn’t really discuss him in the winners circle as form has been a little up and down around this eye injury he got a while back but he’s still here!
Venus, Jelena and Jo out!
It was not a good day at the office for Venus Williams, Jelena Ostapenko and Johanna Konta all finishing the day with a loss.
Venus lost to Wang 6-4 7-5, Johanna Konta’s search for a first win at Roland Garros will extend to 2019 after a 6-4 6-3 defeat to Yulia Putinseva and defending champion Jelena Ostapenko lost 7-5 6-3 to Kozlova.
Venus’ defeat came as a slight surprise as her form hasn’t been as great as it was last season. Johanna’s defeat likewise didn’t shock me too much. I wrote a piece a while ago about Jo and it looks like a lack of confidence and conviction which seemed to be there again today.
In my preview I said I didn’t fancy Ostapenko to defend her title. I haven’t seen improvement from this time last year just attitude so it didn’t really come as a surprise.
Elina & Alex cruise!
Not a bad start for Elina Svitolina and Alex Zverev. Pressure on both to do well here and have started with intent.
Elina was in control and composed like she was in Rome as she saw off a tough opponent in Alja Tomljanovic 7-5 6-3 however Alex Zverev was in brutal form as he cruised to a 6-1 6-1 6-2 win against Berankis in just 69 minutes!
