Kvitova & Pliskova survive
The highest ranked Czech players on the women’s side of the draw had a big battle on their hands today.
Petra Kvitova who I wrote about survived a scare against last years surprise star Cepede Royg who put a good performance.
Karolina Pliskova who has also been in very good form on the clay court season saw off compatriot Krejcikova in a close 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 to progress to the second round at Roland Garros.
Djokovic wins but unconvincingly.
Novak Djokovic who had a very good week in Rome where he played his best tennis of the year without doubt came up against Dutra Silva in round one at Roland Garros and came through 6-3 6-4 6-4 but looked unconvincing.
If I were to compare the performance with any from Rome then it doesn’t come close, he looked flat and really frustrated failing to find much rhythm to dominate which he will need if he will challenge.
Concerns have risen over Stan Wawrinka again. I was surprised he went to Geneva as I don’t think then and now he is match ready.
He received treatment early on in the match for his left knee which was bothering him but did remain competitive however he couldn’t get over the line with Garcia-Lopez winning in 5 sets.
The clay court season has not gone to plan for Azarenka. The former world number one has ended with a 7-5 7-5 defeat to a very impressive Siniakova who didn’t mess around and was solid throughout.
It will be interesting to see what Vika’s plan is over the grass I fully expect her to head off to Mallorca for the beginning of the grass court season where she will be more effective!
It was a good day for the Brits as Cameron Norrie got a win against Gojowczyk 6-1 2-0 with the German bothered by an injury since the beginning of the match.
Heather Watson was also in action against Dodin from France and wasted no time in her quest to find some form at Roland Garros going into a busy grass court season to her with a 6-3 6-0 win.
Dominic Thiem put on a performance which shows why he is a contender. The Austrian who won his 200th match the other day and his 10th title has answered his first question 6-2 6-4 6-1 win against Ivashka.
Ferrer falls apart!
It looked like Ferrer would set up a match with Djokovic in round two and up two sets to love against fellow Spaniard Munar but lost 6-3 6-3 6-7 6-7 5-7 against a commited and determined opponent!
The day also saw wins for Schwartzmann, Tsitsipas, Wozniacki, Coric, Agut, Bencic and Osaka amongst others!
