Week one is almost over. Day 7 saw normal service resume for the majority of the top players on the tour and some surprises once again!
Sharapova and Serena win!
When the draw came out we all saw a potential R4 match up between Sharapova and Serena on the cards and I think it is fair to say we didn’t see it materialising but following respective wins against Georges for Serena and Pliskova for Sharapova with both ladies winning in straight sets. A preview will be up!
Kontaveit confidently dispatches Kvitova
Anett Kontaveit’s win against Petra Kvitova was a surprise but not a shock. The Estonian plays her best tennis on the clay and during the last 12 months has clay court wins against Muguruza, Kerber, Venus, Wozniacki and now Petra on this surface.
David’s marathon win!
The match-up of the round as David Goffin came up against Gael Monfils. This was the Belgian’s big test as we weren’t too sure what to expect coming into Roland Garros after this eye injury had disrupted the beginning of his clay court season. The win over 5 sets was very much Goffin like with the way he fights and with that performance has added himself to a later contender conversation.
The day also saw straight forward wins for Halep, Nadal, Muguruza, Del Potro and Caroline Wozniacki who all progress into week two.
