Roland Garros Day 8 – Keys, Thiem and Novak through. Goffin out and Sascha survives (again)!

Zverev survives again!

For the third match running Alex Zverev has won in five sets. The number two seed has found himself under a lot of pressure and once again this time against Karen Kachanov found himself two sets to one down and had to recover to make his first ever Grand Slam quarter final!

The pressure has been big on him and the attention from the media as well has been unfair. The fact he is winning hasn’t been praised but the fact it’s taking five sets is being scrutinised. Where is the praise for his mental toughness?

Thiem dispatches Kei!

A match too far for Kei Nishikori. Dominic Thiem didn’t really mess about (apart from the third set) as he saw off Nishikori 6-2 6-0 5-7 6-4 on his route to the quarter final.

Dominic Thiem has looked so impressive as the tournament has gone on and right now I’d say he is second favourite for this one.

Novak and Madison win!

Sunday also saw wins for Novak Djokovic in straight sets against a fatigued Fernando Verdasco whilst Madison Keys has continued to quietly progress and improve at Roland Garros with a 6-1 6-4 win against Buzarnescu who of course defeated Elina Svitolina.

Goffin out!

David Goffin doesn’t get much luck. Last year he had that horror fall in the covers at Roland Garros, a bizarre eye injury halted the beginning of his clay court season and now a shoulder injury which was bothering him was a big factor as the Belgian fell to Cecchinato in the fourth round ending his run at Roland Garros and hoping that it is resolved soon!
