Karolina Pliskova – Dart ✅ Azarenka ✅ Buzarnescu ✅ but how far can she go? 🤔

I was lucky to meet Karolina in Birmingham after her doubles defeat with Julia Georges a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately I missed her singles match which she lost early on in the draw and then the question is asked on what to expect at Wimbledon?

Pliskova’s game relies a lot on how she serves and those ground strokes whether it’s the two handed backhand or the forehand which she can produce good angles on which should make her dangerous on grass?

Amazingly it is her least favourite surface which is odd and making the third round of Wimbledon this year was her career best and is now in the fourth round but how far can she go?

She had to fight hard against Harriet Dart from Great Britain in round one to win, the second round match against Azarenka she didn’t have to do too much as the Belarussian’s game did unfold and for her third round win against Buzarnescu she had to come from a set down but in the third set the Romanian did unravel.

What do we take from this tournament so far?

Pliskova has shown good fight and her ground strokes have been strong but is this enough to go deep in the draw? Watching back her game against Buzarnescu there are a few things I picked up on.

The first one being the drop shots, she did get some luck of them but it is still at times quite a heavy shot or an obvious one which brings me onto her movement. Movement going forward can be obvious on what shot she will try to play but also movement at the back of the court and be a bit passive and the shots to.

This is one I picked up from the second set, she drops the ball short and central but doesn’t move quick enough and watches instead of even trying to move more central to get a better read on the ball.

I’d like to sit here and say Karolina is a contender for the title but I still have doubts. She has done great so far and I think she will win a major one day, this test against Kiki Bertens tomorrow will be interesting to see unfold and her route to the final does add pressure being the highest ranked player in the bottom half of the draw.

As I was finishing this piece off new filtered through that Simona Halep had lost which meant Pliskova is the only top 10 ranked player left in the competition going into round four!
