A few months to go until the season finale. Singapore is the place everyone wants to end the season on the WTA tour but only the top 8 will so who is on course for a place?
Simona Halep is all but confirmed her place in Singapore. The world number one is short by a couple of hundred points but as the tour moves on the cut off will shorten so it is just a formality likewise for the resurgence of Angie Kerber who is also all but confirmed her place following her Wimbledon win.
3rd and 4th position is currently occupied by Caroline Wozniacki and Petra Kvitova respectively who will be disappointed with their stay at Wimbledon but on the hard courts they will provide a tougher challenge and for Wozniacki she is of course defending her Singapore title.
5th place so far is taken by Eli Svitolina who has not been in great form for a while finding consistency tough since clay court season and I do hope she finds it again on hard courts. When I watched her at WTA Birmingham I was so impressed with her against Cornet and then next match against Buzarnescu she looked nervous and didn’t seem to trust what she was doing.
400 points separate 5th and 6th right now but if Kasatkina in 7th wins Moscow she is on the toes of Svitolina.
So who are the chasing pack?
6th – Sloane Stephens
7th – Daria Kasatkina
8th – Karolina Pliskova
9th – Garbine Muguruza
10th – Elise Mertens
11th – Julia Georges
12th – Jelena Ostapenko
13th – Kiki Bertens
I wouldn’t look past 13th right now, even though there isn’t many points between Kiki in 13th and Osaka and Keys behind her I just feel the gap will increase.
What stands out the most is Muguruza has big work to do. She won Monterrey and I questioned why she went there before clay just to boost her confidence? The celebration showed that but for her it hasn’t happened this year but is capable of producing something special.
Will Sloane hold on? I’m not sure. She is so unpredictable and her Grand Slam record of late shows that;
US Open 2017 – Winner
Australian Open 2018 – R1
Roland Garros 2018 – Runner-Up
Wimbledon 2018 – R1
Who knows what to expect?
If I had to pick three players I’d like from the remaining pack to qualify it would be Daria Kasatkina, Garbine Muguruza and Kiki Bertens.
Just to throw a thought out there Serena Williams is currently 17th on the race despite playing four tournaments this year and is less than 1000 points off 8th place. Imagine that…!
