Day of Cincinnati was one to remember. The best took part as they battled, cruised and fell short as preparations for New York come to a close but what were the stories?
Andy Murray who decided against playing in Toronto following his marathon in Washington came to Cincinnati a week early to train but against Lucas Pouille in round one the Brit fell short to the Frenchman who has struggled for form this year but put on probably his best performance of the year winning 6-1 1-6 6-4 against the Brit.
There were rumours that Andy could take a wildcard into the ATP250 tournament in Winston-Salem next week but he has revoked this and will just head to Flushing Meadows.
Novak and Stan through!
It wasn’t easy for Novak Djokovic or Stan Wawrinka but both players have booked their place in the next round of Cincinnati.
Djokovic came through a tough 6-4 7-6 win against American Steve Johnson where as Stan Wawrinka had to do it the hard way with a 6-2 4-6 6-3 win against Diego Schwartzman.
Next up for Novak is a meeting with Adrian Mannarino where as for Stan a meeting with Nishikori!
Madison and Vika battle!
Madison Keys and Victoria Azarenka’s preparations for US Open have gotten off to a good start in Cincinnati. Madison who has struggled of late with form and injuries and of course has final points to defend at Flushing Meadows in a few weeks time came from 3-6 down to win 3-6 7-6 6-4 against fellow American Mattek-Sands.
Victoria Azarenka also had to do an escape act coming from 6-7 down to see of Carla Suarez Navarro 6-7 6-2 6-4 to progress to the next round.
Denis wins NextGen battle!
Denis Shapovalov and Frances Tiafoe both put on a very good performance when they met on Day 1 but it was the Canadian who edged a very close battle as he looks to progress further at another Masters 1000 event.
