Well, if you had a ticket for Arthur Ashe last night you would not be short of drama. Maria Sharapova and Roger Federer were in action looking to secure their place in the quarter finals and lost.
Maria Sharapova who had never lost a night match on Ashe in her career with a record of 22-0 came up against birthday girl Suarez Navarro who last year didn’t celebrate as she lost to Venus but now the 30 year old could not have dreamed of a better present!
Sharapova just couldn’t get the better of Suarez Navarro who played a clever baseline game in which she defend deep and used that slice to draw Sharapova in and she could then slowly move towards the baseline and used that backhand so well passing her time and time again.
Roger Federer’s loss was more of a surprise. After looking very comfortable on his way to taking the first set 6-3 against the Australian this was not going to stop John Millman who played solid throughout the remainder of the match.
The Australian who will be representing his country in Davis Cup in just over a weeks time did a good job of holding serve and taking the sets to the final stages and came up trumps in the pressure stages on route to his biggest win!
Federer looked off the boil. He said post match the heat and humidity bothered him and he wasn’t ready for it
