Thiem finally arrives, Nishikori with no surprise… work to do for both!

Well, it’s been an odd week of tennis.

Kei Nishikori performed well to see off Roger Federer in straight sets to begin the week setting the cat amongst the pigeons but that win seems a lifetime ago now following a 6-0 6-1 defeat to Kevin Anderson and a 6-1 6-4 defeat to Dominic Thiem.

Dominic Thiem has left me scratching my head. I felt he competed well against Anderson but was missing variety and was pretty predictable. The performance against Roger Federer was even more bizarre, it once again was predictable and even though he tried be aggressive it was messy likewise was a bit of his performance against Nishikori. Thiem played much better but at the same time I felt it was messy, it felt a little like hit and hope and the way he returns serve on hard courts confuses me.

Over the coming weeks or days I will be looking at Thiem’s game in particular to see where I believe he goes from here. You cannot play this way on a hard court and it seems bizarre to turn up here looking flat and without a plan which is an issue and is something that needs solving otherwise contending on hard courts next year can be forgotten but is achievable.
