5 titles, 5 remarkable stories from 2018

2018 gave us a lot of memories.

First major titles, big comebacks and the unexpected but here are my five title highlights from the year.

Caroline Wozniacki – Australian Open

This has to be my highlight of the year. This final between Caro and Simona was so intense and the battle to the title was something incredible. At the time it was unfair there had to be a loser.

For Caro the win and the title is a great achievement but if you think back to the heartache she has suffered in her career and how close she has come close in the past this achievement was incredible to witness.

Simona Halep – Roland Garros

Another massive highlight.

For me this was by far the most incredible run at a tournament I think I have ever seen. The fact she came so close to winning in Paris last year and Melbourne  this year I cannot fault what she did in Roland Garros.

The mental strength she showed and especially fighting back from a set down against Sloane was out of this world.

Novak Djokovic – Wimbledon

I mean wow, remember after Paris where everyone wrote him off?

This tournament said to the tour, I am here and I am fighting and it set a precedent which no one else could match. The level of tennis was outstanding and when you consider how he was playing earlier in the year this had a feeling of relief, belief, welcome back and sent out a big message to the rest.

Novak Djokovic – US Open

The message was sent out, there was a blip in Cincinnati as he stumbled against Tsitsipas but at the time I wrote a piece where I said he’s been a bit shaky since Wimbledon but you’d be silly to bet against Novak.

Two sets dropped in the opening two rounds but from then it the world number one was plain sailing from there as he lifted another major in what was a historic year for the Serb

Kiki Bertens – Cincinnati

A few title wins hit me but the one that stood out for me was this one from Kiki. Having followed her game and what was a consistently good year ending in an appearance at Singapore it was a really nice feel good story.

The emotion was real, we saw it at Wimbledon and then in Cincinnati winning the biggest title of her career. I expect big things again in 2019.
