When you think of Romanian tennis you think of Simona Halep.
Until around Prague I didn’t really know too much about Mihaela Buzarnescu. I watched her against Petra Kvitova in the final there and despite losing she gave the Czech number one the run around and I liked it.
I like players who use their skill to make themselves challenge the best and she did it without fear.
I watched her against Svitolina in Roland Garros, it was one of my favourite performances of the tournament. A few weeks later she played Cepede-Roug in Nottingham who also put on a good performance at Roland Garros and she impressed.
At this stage, I did my research
She missed four years due to injury and went to University where she graduated. She came back fighting when many would just think to call it a day, that is what we call an inspirational story!
The crowds came to see her in Birmingham. It was a pleasure to meet Mihaela, to see her live was just so good. The variety she showed and the fearless play really got the crowd going.
She stopped for a photo with everyone and was so kind and humble. (excuse my sunburnt face)
Unfortunately injury stuck and she missed the US Open but she won her first title in San Jose and despite a season ending with a four match losing streak the season ended with a ranking of 24 beginning the year at 56.
This does mean Mihaela will be seeded for the Australian Open which begins on the 14th of January which is the day I fly out so I hope to see her there when I arrive!
Well done on an incredible year and see you in 2019!
