The concerns are there.
Rafael Nadal since the beginning of last year has only completed one hard court tournament which was Toronto which he won. Since the beginning of last year he has withdrawn from 17 of the 18 tournaments he was scheduled to play.
This now does lead to a big concern on his body and what will happen between now and Melbourne without a tournament completed since he won Toronto against Tsitsipas around 6 months ago.
To only have completed one of these tournaments in the last year is quite astounding and it emphasises the battle he is in with his body.
His record on clay court last year was exceptional and we know how much he enjoys the surface more than compared to the hard courts and what it does to his body and I would be greatly surprised if he didn’t try to play in Melbourne but a mid-way withdrawal wouldn’t surprise me too much.
