A week in Dubai which left us mesmerised.
The tennis was spectacular, if you ever needed an advert for women’s tennis then look no further.
I cannot pick a moment because there were so many.
The performances and the title win of Belinda Bencic was out of this world, what she achieved was truly magnificent to defeat Halep, Sabalenka, Svitolina and Kvitova in the manner she did to win the title was superb.
What about Eli Svitolina? I was as well impressed with her in Dubai this week, she looked like she was a bit more locked into the battle which is what I saw down in Melbourne so could she be set for a big couple of weeks in the desert?
Or Mladenovic, that performance was unexpected but inspiring against Osaka, can we maybe start seeing some consistency from her now?
Muguruza, Halep and Kvitova all have something to think about now.
Where do they go from here?
One of the stories of the week had to be that of Hsieh Su-Wei who brings her tennis to the court and she can annoy anyone but in a good way. We saw her dismantle Halep at Wimbledon last year and she gave Sasnovich, Kerber and Pliskova the run around in Dubai.
Her style of tennis is great to watch, it is unorthodox but she is that player you look out for in the draw because you just don’t want to have to run into her.
Karolina Pliskova. If you ask me right now who has impressed me consistently this season then it would be Pliskova. I’ve seen her live in Birmingham and in Melbourne and night and day was the level of performances. This year I’d say she is playing the best tennis on the tour right now.
We have Petra Kvitova, slipped up in the final again. The concentration and maybe belief/nerves aren’t there are the moment for Petra who has played so well this year but this is letting her down. She should be competing at the top regularly but getting over that line mentally and getting that trophy is tough at the moment.
Like I said, need an advert for women’s tennis then look no further than this week!
