0-6 1-6 – More questions than answers following Indian Wells crash-out

Good fortune and good form but for Garbine Muguruza her run at Indian Wells quickly went bad.

The Spaniard got a good opening round win and then a set up against an injured Serena Williams the American retired and a good battle against Kiki Bertens showed us some of her best grinding out skills setting up a meeting with the in-form Andreescu and well I don’t even know where to begin.

Garbine Muguruza’s performance was flat, lethargic and uninspiring and after such a good start to the week it is frustrating.

I didn’t catch the first set, I only caught the second and I was thinking to myself it can only get better but it didn’t.

It was this time last year when she crashed out of Miami and Indian Wells and decided to go to Monterrey which I questioned why as winning there seemed to unsettle her and I think it is fair to say she hasn’t been the same since.

I think she needs a change, the moment a player goes to play aggressive tennis against her then her game falls apart. Kiki Bertens plays a bit of both and it allowed Garbine to step in but she needs a new plan as players are taking more risks and have importantly adapted their games. I’m still seeing the same tennis from Garbine that defeated Serena at Roland Garros a few years back and it was good then but this sport moves on.

I’ve said this before as well, a change of coach. When her and Sumyk have these on-court chats I don’t think it helps. A few games away from going out Sam said to her;

“Change something, do something. Make a choice”

What do you take from that?

We will have to see what happens next
