Marin Cilic’ year has gone from bad to worse.
The Croat will head into the clay court season with a win/loss of 4/4 for 2019.
Statistically his game is where you’d expect and where it normally is for the season so far the only thing that really pulled him down was points won on second serve.
I missed his match against Rublev and have watched it back and I like Cilic but you get out of a match what you put in and I was let down to be honest and I honestly didn’t feel the effort was there.
Here are a couple of examples;

Both shots show a reluctance to go to the forehand and push himself.
Lack of effort in my opinion was a factor against Rublev but also a lack of depth he created from the baseline really caught himself out.
I’m not saying this is an underlying factor for his poor start to the season but he just doesn’t seem fully focused which is unusual for a player like Cilic who usually has that no-nonsense look when he plays.
Thankfully for Marin with the difference in points he will only be at around number 11 in the world when the next rankings come out and even a good run on the clay will see him push up in the race as well where he is currently around 60th in the world going into April.
