You can question her form but never question her determination or commitment.
Simona Halep showed us once again why she is in the frame to be world number one again with a fair from vintage performance but a vintage Halep gritty and stubborn win.
Halep struggled pretty early on with the rhythm of the match, she changed racket and fell down a break she just couldn’t recover from. To add to the issues for the Romanian she had a slight knee issue as well which required taping up and it was haltering her movement.
The second set more questions were asked of the former number one who lost at this stage last year.
Hercog continued to press and perform to such a high level and it would take something special to break her with her forehand her incredible net play causing havoc for the Romanian who struggled.
A few wild forehands from Hercog gave a break to Halep but converting the break was an issue and Halep was broken back quickly.
Cue the tie-break.
Halep arrived, she brought her best tennis! Passing shots to secure a big set of tennis.
When you talk about momentum swings this is what you see.
That tie-break if anything killed off the fight from Hercog who to her credit gave her all but Halep who let’s be honest was not at her best and hopefully this knee issue isn’t a major problem got over the line and next up for her will be Venus Williams as she remains in the hunt to finish Miami as no.1 in the world again.
