I have been meaning to write this for a while but if you are thinking of going to Melbourne Park for the Australian Open then do it!
It was the best experience of my life!
Pretty easy to get, you have 13 minutes once you’ve signed in online so don’t run out of time! Do separate purchases if required. Also your bank, like mine did might block your card and you have to start again! You can choose arena and dates with ease. Usually go on sale in mid October.
The trains are really good and reliable. The easiest thing to do is get a Myki card and top it up. You have to remember to tap on and tap off before you get on the train and once you get off!
There is a free tram from central Melbourne to Melbourne Park but I was staying outside of Melbourne and got the train to Richmond on a day and then it would be a 10 minute walk to one of the entrances. I would recommend this despite there being a free tram the queue to get in from this side is always massive!
Inside Melbourne Park;
Once you’re in there is soo much to do. It stands head and shoulders above every other major. Multiple seating areas in Grand Slam city, dining options, pop up shops, live music. It is truly a wonderful experience!
Staff are really helpful as well as other fans who I spoke to loads of on days I was there. Make sure you find the fan stand and pick one up, you will need it!
I was sat in the sun on Rod Laver Arena and my god is was hot. At one point it read 43 degrees and I was planning getting up and moving around, make sure you have hat, water, sun cream, fan and something to eat. Thankfully the roof got shut!
Plan your Day;
The good thing is as well a practice schedule is posted online as well, if you want to see your favourite then get there early (they will be late) ! The park is well signed as well and the access to the outdoor courts including Melbourne Arena is so good, the 1573 stadium was one of my favourites!
Nothing beats tennis under the sun set in Melbourne. Nadal v De Minaur was my pick of the bunch and it was such an experience and despite being at the very top the view was incredible and the atmosphere was stunning!
If it is a late finish and you don’t fancy a train journey then Uber and 13 cabs are very good and queue up outside Melbourne Park!
There are some key apps to have if you are in Melboure which are;
13cabs – Melbourne’s biggest taxi company
Public Transport Victoria – trains/buses etc..
If you’re thinking of doing it then do it! If I could again I would!
