https://twitter.com/SloaneStephens/status/1114014859086180354It has been an underwhelming year so far for Sloane Stephens.
The American who of course won the US Open just over 18 months ago and was in the finals of Roland Garros, Montreal and Singapore last year just hadn’t got going.
Of course that split with Kamau Murray raised questions and raised more over her level of tennis for the opening four months of the season which as I said has been underwhelming.
Sloane’s style of tennis is very much big from the baseline and she will look to dominate from this position. I have said time and time again it’s impressive when it works but when it doesn’t it can be quite messy especially on a hard court.
I like this time of year when we see Sloane on a clay court as she can bring a bit more speed variation and variety to her game and this is what we have seen in Charleston and I hope it sets her up for a good clay court season.
Following her win against Tomljanovic from a set down she was asked in press;
“Why did you want this one more than other ones?”
To which she replied;
“Because I’m tired of f*****g losing, losing f*****g sucks” to which she laughed as did the press room.
The win set up a match with good friend and fellow American Madison Keys in the quarter finals.
I watched her match against Madison and she will probably look back with regret that she didn’t secure the win. She did have multiple breaks and served for the first set on a few occasions but never got it over the line and became a little flat in her movement which led into poor shot making but overall this week has been a good week for the American.
