Two early exits already in Madrid and to be honest I have to say I’m not overly surprised.
Elina Svitolina was one of the casualties in round one but the Ukrainian has always had an abysmal record in Madrid with six appearances in the tournament and just three wins with her never getting past the second round.
This was Eli’s first tournament in around 6 weeks following an on-going knee injury following her early exit in Miami but prior to that the 24 year old has had a very good season so here is hoping she finds a bit of momentum following her 4-6 6-7 defeat to Pauline Parmentier.
The other early exit?
I myself am not surprised, I said in my preview piece that for me she needed to do well here. I didn’t think going to Monterrey would benefit her clay court game and should have spent some time practising on the surface. Garbine did have a injury so missed Stuttgart but I’m interested to see what happens going forward.
She lost a tight match in straight sets to Petra Martic 7-5 7-6 who has been in good form of late but the Spaniard did have set points in both sets so a really big missed opportunity for her.
