Thankfully by the time this one had begun the sun had moved around and was not shining on the main court during an extremely hot day in Madrid.
It was the world number two Simona Halep who got off to the better start finding an early break of serve before being pegged back not just once but twice as Kiki Bertens began to settle into the rhythm of the match and Halep’s level began to drop and before you know it from 4-2 up now trailing 5-4 with the Dutch number one taking the first set.
The momentum continued for the 7th seed who broke immediately which was greeted by massive shouts of SI-MO-NA but down 4-6 0-2.
The Romanian had struggled so far with the slice and the drop shots of Bertens however she pulled off some stunning down the line shots to keep herself in contention!
To the left of me the shouts of SI-MO-NA continued and spurred on the former champion to hold and break back before putting together a poor service game with Kiki continuing pressing from the baseline and going for the forehand corner of Halep allowing herself to step in.
The questions continued to come for Halep down a set and a break but could she pull it all together and find a way back in?
Her next service game at 2-4 was exactly what she needed! First serve still wasn’t finding spot but she looked free on the forehand putting that serving question back on the shoulders of Kiki Bertens who got to the final here last year before being beaten to the title but Petra Kvitová!
0-15 and 15-30 followed and then most bizarre moment;
Incredible defending by Halep and Bertens hit an overhead out but before the second bounce it struck and airborne Halep so instead of two break points it was 30-30!
The break point came but the big serves followed from Kiki who found herself one game away…
A double fault came for 30-30 but then match point and Halep, wow she did a stunning job of saving it;
Another came and another went…
Then, there was a third
And now we have a new champion in Madrid!
