Following 8 wins in his first 9 matches on clay to kick off the clay court season with some excellent runs in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona I didn’t think it would end like this.
Daniil Medvedev has now lost four on the bounce which include final defeat to Thiem in Barcelona, two first round exits in Madrid and Rome and now an early exit in Paris despite being two sets up against Herbert.
Looking at the whole picture he is having a good season but with form of late were left thinking what could have been not only in Paris but since Barcelona where he has gone off the boil.
Here is his clay court record;
It is a shame because it did start so well but his clay court season has dipped off and for the third year running he leaves Roland Garros still looking for his first win.
Daniil once again lacked that injection of power and pace which has been missing. 29 winners in 5 sets of tennis is not great at all. If you look at it in the bigger picture 29 winners in 49 service games.
He created opportunities but only took 5 of 23 and was not as effective as the Frenchman at the net.
The 23 year old in the long-run of the season might be a bit thankful for the break ahead of the grass court season following what was his 44th match of the season before June.
