On a day where we expected some dodgy weather in Paris but the sun shone, it did that for Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep who have booked their place into round two.
First up was Naomi Osaka and it was messy.
The world number one lost the first set 0-6 to Schmeidlova who has lost her last 9 round one Grand Slam matches dating back to 2015 and she didn’t even hit a winner.
The second set did get better for her but a micro-climate of rain at 3-0 on top of Chatrier led to a suspension of play with the rest of Roland Garros completely rain free. The quick 10 minute break if that did bother the world number one as she was pegged back for 3-3.
It got worse for Naomi as Anna served for the match not once but twice but couldn’t see it out before Naomi cruised in the tie-break and then raced to the third set to secure a big win.
Simona Halep on the other hand played very well but had a blip.
The Romanian who is of course the defending champion in Paris extending her winning run to 8 in the French capital with a three set victory over Tomljanovic.
6-2 was the scoreline in the first set for the world number three looking to aim back on top sooner rather than later but the second set where Alja just let loose on her ground strokes and Halep struggled to deal with the power coming her way.
It was thankfully just a blip from the defending champion who wasted no time at all as she stormed to a 5-0 lead in the decider before seeing it out.
