The goal is Grand Slam 24.
Serena came close in London and New York last year. The 23 time champion got to the final four in Melbourne and recently slipped up to Sofia Kenin in the third round in Paris leaving question marks over the potential of picking up number 24.
For me, I don’t think it has to be different.
I am a big fan of Serena. What she has done in her career on and off the court is unmatched and admirable.
If she is going to win No.24 preparations I see no reason why there should be wholesale changes and if they were required I’d imagine her, Patrick and her team would make them.
I know there has been a couple of injury issues this year but you simply cannot go from Melbourne to three retirements at Indian Wells, Miami & Rome before going out in the third round of Roland Garros.
Roland Garros is never her favourite but I still believe preparations need to be different for Wimbledon despite her being last years runner-up.
The ladies tour is so open that the defeat to Kenin wasn’t too surprising. Just look at the final four in Paris this year, unexpected.
I still think it’s a possibility and we know how good she has been on the grass at SW19 over the years and if she is fit she stands a chance.
I don’t think Serena was fit at Roland Garros. She looked off the pace especially with her foot-work and has time to prepare for Wimbledon.
I’m interested to see what Serena does, I would expect her to be at Wimbledon pretty soon. Many have suggested the potential of a warm-up event but it would be quite something to see Serena play a warm-up grass event.
Do I think it has to be different? No.
The conditions suit her game. If she serves well, is moving well and hits her ground strokes well she will take some beating. The issue however this year has been getting up the gears in matches and at times has fallen short.
