It’s already been a good start for the Brit’s in London and Birmingham this week. We thought we only had 7 Brit’s in singles action but James Ward has qualified at Queens winning his highest ranked match for four years. The other big news which isn’t singles related is to do with the doubles…
Venus Williams is playing doubles in Birmingham. Her team mate? Harriet Dart! The 22 year old Brit is going to have the moment of her career right now playing doubles with Venus Williams what an hour!
It is also good to see James Ward back in action. He’s had it rough with injuries but qualifying here will do him the world of good. James has Gilles Simon in round one.
There are three Brits in that bottom quarter of the draw with Stan Wawrinka also taking on Dan Evans in the battle of the one-handed backhands and Cam Norrie has bagged himself a meeting with Kevin Anderson the second who hasn’t played since Miami.
Jay Clarke is also in action in the bottom half against Lucas Pouille who has had a tough season. Kyle Edmund is also in the draw as the top Brit but against the top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Over in Birmingham…
Johanna Konta will see her hopes of a run in Birmingham begin on Monday as she takes on the unpredictable Anett Kontaveit coached by former coach of Andy Murray and Ana Ivanovic Nigel Sears.
Heather Watson and Harriet Dart received wildcards for the draw. Heather will be up against an unpredictable player as well in Barbora Strycova where as Harriet will also be up against the unpredictable Yulia Putintseva.
