Maria Sharapova is back in action.
The former Wimbledon champion is playing her first Wimbledon warm-up event for some years in fact since 2010. The Russian did have a two year deal at Birmingham which she didn’t see through withdrawing injured on both occasions.
She was practicing in Mallorca on the grass and got offered a wildcard.
Yesterday she saw off Kuzmova 7-6 6-0 saving two set points in the first set before she cruised to the second round.
In her post-match conference she said she was pleased to test her arm out.
Maria was also vocal on social media very soon after her win which is a surprise but she is so happy with the win on grass and to be back after almost five months out.
Out of the active players on the tour she does have a 35 win and 6 defeat record in warm-up grass events prior to Wimbledon. This record isn’t really a fair reflection of a chance at Wimbledon as Mallorca is her first warm-up event since 2010.
I’m interested to see how Maria does get on this week at Mallorca, next up for her is Angie Kerber who needs to find some form quite quickly after a quiet year.
