Osaka battles through Sakkari on an action packed day at Birmingham despite the rain!

It’s been a great day in Birmingham! Rain may have upset play in the last couple of matches but the quality of tennis today at the Edgebaston Priory Club has been exceptional.

A day which has seen Julia Georges recover from a set down to win also saw wins for Putintseva, Kristyna Pliskova, Martic and world number one Naomi Osaka who saw off a spirited Maria Sakkari.

Maria was in fact the first person I saw coming through security having a practice

Next to the Greek number one was the Pliskova sisters who we now know will face each other in round two!

Further in by the main court was Johanna Konta having a fun practice on her day off today.

Next to her was Hsieh and Strycova in their doubles match which I stuck to for a while with the two winning an entertaining battle!

After that I went and caught a bit of Yastrzemski and Georges and I must have been a bit of a bad luck charm for the Ukrainian who unraveled and for some reason kept trying to go to the Georges backhand but got picked off.

Once that was over I headed out to court 1. Iga Swiatek who caused some issues at Roland Garros came up against a former Roland Garros champion in Jelena Ostapenko. The Latvian was super good winning 6-0 6-2 on her way to play Jo Konta in round two! She even gave us a little smile at the end 😁

Following the conclusion it was time to head back to Centre Court. The unpredictable and determined Maria Sakkari against the world number one Naomi Osaka.

Naomi was in good form to begin, she raced to take the first set 6-1. Maria came into the match, she was pumped up! The backhand slice was causing havoc for Naomi with such a low bounce she couldn’t do anything for it.

Maria took the second set 6-4 and in the third a big game seemed to seal the fate for both.

At 2-2 in the third set we had a marathon game with Naomi having to battle to save 6 break points before going on to break Sakkari to 15.

Before the rain came Naomi managed to seal her win;

Unfortunately the rain pulled a halt to the days proceedings.

This meant that Venus Williams singles debut in Birmingham is on hold and Donna Vekic who has had enough of rain these last couple of weeks had to wait until Wednesday to play her match.

The good news before the rain, I had the pleasure to meet Naomi Osaka following her win!
