Ash Barty, World number one!

We have a new world number one.

Hard work, determination and of course winning have contributed to the incredible achievement by Ash becoming the first Australian woman to be number one since Goolagong 43 years ago.

It was one of those possibilities coming into Birmingham which continued to gain momentum as the week went on and of course as the number one Naomi Osaka went out to Yulia Putintseva.

Ash’ season began with a final in Sydney, quarter final in Melbourne before going onto win in Miami. She recently won her first Grand Slam in Paris and now the Nature Valley Classic down at Birmingham winning a title on all surfaces on route to becoming the world number one.

At the same time she has also been playing the major events in doubles with a former world number one Victoria Azarenka and they also won Rome together on the clay.

The achievements just this year have been super incredible and I do expect it to get better for her. Her game is complete and on all surfaces she has shown how she can take small changes to contend on all three.

The season I expect to get better. Ash doesn’t seem like a shy type of person and takes things in her stride. A lot of talk at Wimbledon will be about her and of course at the end of the year she will most likely lead the Australian Fed Cup team in Perth as they look to win the event for the first time in 45 years.
