I think we will have a new winner at Wimbledon. The question is, who?
The two I’m highly tipping for the title here are Ashleigh Barty and Kiki Bertens.
Both players have what you’d call an ‘all court’ game.
We have seen over the course of this season and last both players take their games to new heights on the tour and are reaping the awards of it.
Ash Barty for me comes in as the favourite. If you would have told me that 8 weeks ago I would have been skeptical. The transition she showed on clay and how she has backed it up in Birmingham her game is at such a solid level even over the course of the year I can’t really remember a ‘messy’ performance from the Australian.
The new world number two just seems so comfortable and composed on the court right now. She has the game, big forehand and the ability to change things up with the slice which is key on the grass.
Kiki Bertens is my other choice.
I thought Kiki would have gone pretty far in Paris but unfortunately she was ill and had to withdraw from the tournament.
She is in Eastbourne at the moment and things are going well there for her.
Her game style is similar to Barty but the Dutch number one does have more of a dominating baseline game. Her net game is good but is somewhere where there could be improvement in her anticipation.
Kiki likes playing into the open space and on grass you have to trust what you are doing and she has shown over the last 18 months how she has taken her game to another level and the confidence that brings.
Since the beginning of last year she has 17 top 10 wins and made the quarter finals at Wimbledon last year.
I do think that both ladies have the composure, trust and belief in their game to really turn compete here without a feeling of pressure.
