Serena Williams seemed very chilled in press.
The American was pressed on her fitness, Paris controversy, Murray and the meeting between Venus and Coco and seemed in good spirits.
The former number one is always open and honest in press but seemed more ready for this than she was in Paris.
When asked she said she feels good. She has been training well for just over a week.
Her coach Patrick Mouratoglou gave more light on the knee problem and said Serena is healthy from this problem which has caused her issues all season. They decided to stay in Paris after Roland Garros and get to the route of the problem.
Patrick said “I’m happy because Serena is injury free finally” The knee was a problem for a few months and would swell up and forced her out of tournaments and limited her movement.
They saw a doctor and they said the solution was not complicated at all.
The Paris controversy with Dominic Thiem following him being kicked out of the press room has bee solved with Serena saying;
“Actually stuck up for the guy, so… I don’t understand how I got a bad personality for telling them what they did was wrong to him. But we spoke about it. I’ve always liked him. I still like him. He’s a great, like,player.”
When pressed on the mixed doubles with Andy Murray questioned she said she is available.
However the American did say;
“Let’s see how my knee is going, I’m finally doing good. I don’t want to like go back.”
Decisions have to made by Tuesday for mixed doubles.
Serena is in this rough part of the draw but if she is fit and moving freely then she stands a great chance on the grass.
When asked about Ash Barty being new World number one which she didn’t know she said;
“I think Ash, I don’t know anyone who has anything bad to say about her. She’s like the sweetest, cutest girl on tour. She’s so nice.”
It’s begs the question, why did she play Paris because Patrick even said afterwards she wasn’t fit.
“She always thinks she can find a way, even if injured and in pain, ”Mouratoglou said. “It’s her No. 1 quality, to believe in herself even in the most difficult situations, so I don’t want to take that away from her.”
Serena was asked about Gauff v Venus. She said it is very exciting and that Coco plays like Venus. She might watch but she does get nervous watching her older sister play.
At the beginning of press the 23 time major champion had to it put to her about her chances despite not playing much this year to which she replied “I know how to play tennis.”
Despite little match play and knee problems this year her coach Patrick Mouratoglou did say at the end;
“Every day that passes, she is stronger because we are building on something solid, whereas before we could not.”
Is 24 on the cards? Even in that top quarter? Will she played mixed with Andy?
