A moment in history; 15 year old Cori Gauff defeats Venus Williams

A few months ago back in Miami Cori ‘Coco’ Gauff was annoyed that she lost in round two to Daria Kasatkina as a win would have set her up against one of her idols Venus Williams.

Three months later, what has happened this last week is truly magnificent!

Cori got given a wildcard for the qualifying at Wimbledon and during her week which she sailed through at Roehampton even had some homework to do including a science test and some of her teachers until they saw it online didn’t even know she played tennis.

Next thing is she’s been drawn against her idol Venus Williams

Venus and Serena are the only reasons she started playing tennis and said following her win in Roehampton that she would have taken up any sport they would have done.

At the end of her 6-4 6-4 win against Venus she thanked the 5 time champion at the net who congratulated the 15 year old.

The level of composure and the performance from the teenager was just insane.

To have a match on Court One against one of Wimbledon’s greatest players and do what she did was out of this world, a true moment in history!

As expected things did get nervous serving it out but at 4-4 in the second set what shook me the most was down break point how she went for a 108mph body serve on second serve to get back to deuce. That is another level of confidence and she’s 15!!!

You could see what it meant to her and her parents. Coco also called it the first time she’s cried after a win and it’s one she will never forget.

Next up on Wednesday is a tough grass court player in Magdalena Rybarikova.
