Welcome to the first this new edition ‘Caught The Line’ it is a round-up of the weeks tennis, talking points and of course funny moments.
How not to cover a court…
The tournament in Antayla, Turkey has only been going for a couple of years since 2017 but this year’s was the last event. They just cannot fill a bus let alone a court with hardly any spectators heading to the event to see the tennis.
It turns out they don’t know how to cover a court during a rain delay…
Taylor Fritz has won his first ATP title! The American has been enjoying the sun down at Devonshire Park, Eastbourne and has walked away with the silverware.
The 21 year old who is married and has a kid saw off top seed Guido Pella, the impressive Hubert Hurkacz, two Brit’s Edmund and Jubb and fellow American returning from injury Sam Querrey in the final.
Hubert Hurkacz really showed us how to cover the net when he came up against Taylor Fritz
8/10 for the dives Hubert.
Science Test – Wimbledon Qualifying – Venus Williams
In a week Coco Gauff has finished her science test in the middle of her trip to Roehampton for Wimbledon qualifying.
Following three wins on the bounce including a win against top seed Bolsova the 15 year old has qualified for Wimbledon and will now the oldest player in the draw… 39 year old Venus Williams.
Coco in an interview before the draw was even made said she only took up tennis because she loved watching Serena and Venus play, now she is going to play Venus Williams! Pretty amazing!
Busy day at Antayla…
That Women’s Quarter :O
The women’s draw at Wimbledon is pretty incredible but this top quarter is unheard of chaos and I cannot wait for it to unfold…
Barty, Muguruza, Bencic, Riske, Vekic, Serena, Goerges, Sharapova and Kerber in the same quarter is incredible. 3 of these players were in last years semi-finals.
ATP Player Council Crumbles
Worrying time for the ATP. The player council which of course lost Justin Gimelstob (who was favourite to take CEO job) because of the battery charge against him has taken another turn. A 7 hour meeting took place to vote a temporary member. The split in the vote was 5-5 so no majority decision was made.
However, a decision has been made to put Weller Evans one of the candidates in until the end of the year. Some reckon that Gimelstob will pull strings from the outside being very close to Evans.
Since the meeting Friday night Jamie Murray, Sergiy Stakhovsky, Dani Vallverdu and Robin Haase have all resigned from the council so watch this space!
Pliskova bulldozers to Eastbourne title!
A lovely week for Karolina Pliskova. She isn’t keen on grass but does well on the surface. The world number three wasted no time all week as she picked up her third career grass title and second in Eastbourne.
Pliskova raced past Kiki Bertens in the semi-finals and annihilated Angie Kerber the defending Wimbledon champion 6-1 6-4 in the final.
I’m so sorry Antayla, you know things are bad when hawkeye imagines more of a crowd
With Wimbledon beginning here are some links to pieces to have a read of 🙂
