First two games from Victoria Azarenka were messy.
The following twelve? It was beautiful.
The tennis Victoria Azarenka played was unstoppable first thing this morning taking just over an hour to see off Alja Tomljanovic from Australia 6-2 6-0.
Before the match a lot of talk was about Vika’s serve and it’s no secret it hasn’t really stood up at big moments.
6 of her 12 defeats coming into Wimbledon this year have been third set defeats and in five of them which include her last three defeats she has been a set up but her serve just hasn’t been there.
I hope for nothing more in tennis than for Vika to get back to winning a big singles title, it would be a lovely moment and if she can continue the path she is on I believe she will get there.
Her all round game today was so good! Her ground strokes and confidence she played with them were unstoppable, Alja just couldn’t react to the depth that Vika continued to get on it.
The serving stats though;
30/40 first serves in (75%)
21/30 first serves won (70%)
5/10 second serves won (50%)
I’m excited to see what happens here for Vika over the course of the fortnight. She does have doubles with Ash Barty as well to factor in with things but I’m sure if both continue on this singles path it might have to be shelved.
A really impressive level from Vika, she didn’t let it drop and practically served out a double bagel today.
