It was a match that we expected a lot from.
The opening two games of the match took 8 minutes to complete. Former world number one’s up against each other looking for a place on middle Monday at Wimbledon.
It was Vika who got ahead at 3-1 with some powerful hitting but then it fell apart for the Belarusian which is a big shame.
3-1 up to losing the set 3-6. Simona Halep did what she had to do. I said in my preview I have been impressed with the way she has conducted herself and the level of tennis in tricky situations.
The slow courts for me are helping her be more of a threat behind the baseline. Her court coverage today was incredible as were her running ground strokes and that slower surface is the platform she does require to execute her game.
An issue during the match for Vika became the unforced errors. We saw her a number of times try and pump herself up and try to get her feet moving but she just couldn’t find her feet and the errors just rolled hitting 33 unforced errors in what ended up being just 16 games.
The second set was more of a run away for the Romanian who just remained in control and despite the errors leaking off Azarenka’s racket she still stayed focused and aware of what she had to do.
Overall, Halep has had a good first week! Tough battle in round one with Sasnovich especially in that second set. Round two against fellow Romanian Buzarnescu she moved so well but her level in the third was exceptional and today a very composed performance.
