It’s a result we all expected.
In the previous six meetings between Serena Williams and Carla Suarez Navarro it has been one way traffic and that followed suit in their seventh meeting.
The Spaniard had only won 16 games in 12 sets of tennis against the American coming into this seventh meeting where as Serena has won 72 games in the 12 sets of tennis.
It was business as usual for the former world number one who was calm, composed and locked in to what she had to do to get to her 14th quarter final at Wimbledon.
Early break set the tone and Carla did well to make it not a double break early on in the match forcing the seven time champion to serve it out which she did despite a lean over the net on a break point.
Second set followed the same routine but this time Serena went up 3-0 breaking Carla’s serve twice in the opening minutes but a wobbly game from Serena who was broken to love before a good hold of serve from Suarez Navarro for 2-3 but still down a break.
4-2 followed for the American who held some big hitting from 30-30 to extend her lead with the finish line in sight.
A break and a hold and Serena Williams will now face Alison Riske for a place in the semi-finals. These two have been on the American Fed Cup team together but have never played against each other!
